From a predication marker to a specificity and definiteness marker:The syntactic functions of classifiers in Chinese and Nuosu Yi

The paper examines the function of classifiers from the syntactic perspective. Besides its well-known function of being a definiteness marker (Cheng and Sybesma 1999) or a divider (Borer 2005), this paper validates the proposal of viewing the classifier as a nominal predication marker, as first suggested in Bowers (1991). Data from Chinese and Nuosu Yi will be used to delineate the following overarching macro-structure of nominal phrases, which is argued to be universal for all classifier languages.
