Why Classifiers are Not Determiners: From Chinese to Bantu
1. Cheng and Sybesma (1999, 2005) argued that Mandarin and Cantonese classifiers are the counterpart of English definite articles/determiners. Their analysis is based on the following observations: both classifiers and determiners fulfill the individualizing/singularizing function and the deictic function. 2. Wu and Bodomo (2009, hereafter W&B), argued that it is inappropriate to equate Chinese classifiers with English definite determiners for the following reasons.
