Tone Sandhi of the Dipping Tone in Suzhou
Introduction. In Suzhou Chinese, when the citation form of the initial syllable is the dipping tone (”HLM”) in a disyllabic word, the sandhi form of it can be either high level or high falling. The sandhi pattern of these disyllabic words is either ”HL.L” (e.g. ”.inHLvo.L” “to believe”) or ”HH.L” (e.g. ”.inHHfo.L” “the envelope”) in natural speech. These phenomena are investigated and analyzed within the framework of Optimality Theory in this paper.
