The Syntax of Discourse Intonation
Some linguists have argued that discourse intonation, which obviously has semantic content, gets a direct semantic interpretation and is therefore a counterexample to Chomsky’s (1995) “hypothesis that there are no PF-LF interactions relevant to convergence” (p. 220). The present paper argues that discourse intonation is part of the lexicon, and that it is therefore not a counterexample to Chomsky’s hypothesis after all.
