A New Analysis of Resultatives in Mandarin Chinese
There are two kinds of resultative constructions in Mandarin Chinese (hf. Mandarin): phrasal resultatives and resultative verbal compounds. They differ in the word order as well as whether the functional particle de is present: (1) Lisi da de zhanglang si le (Phrasal Resultatives) Lisi hit DE cockroach die ASP ‘Lisi hit the cockroach (and as a result) it was dead.’ (2) Lisi da si zhanglang le (Resultative Verbal Compounds) Lisi hit die cockroach ASP Lit. ‘Lisi hit the cockroach (and as a result) it was dead.’
