Chinese as a Discourse Configurational Language and Its Syntactic Consequences

E.Kiss(1995, 1998)proposes that a language is discourse-configurational if it links either or both of the discourse-semantic functions topic and focus to particular structural positions: topic-prominent languages (discourse-configurational languages with property A) encode the topic function structurally whereas the focus-prominent languages (discourse-configurational languages with property B) encode the focus function structurally.
