Reference-Set Computation and Referential Identification in Child Mandarin
Grodzinsky and Reinhart (1993) and Reinhart (2006) claim that the construction and comparison of a set of competing derivations (known as reference-set computation) comes with a processing cost, and that children’s non-adultlike knowledge regarding Binding Condition B is attributed to their inability to execute this computation. The present research attempts to test the validity of this claim by investigating Mandarin-speaking children’s (age 4;7-5;10) understanding of similar referential dependencies in the so-called de-resultative construction, exemplified below.
