L2 English reflexives and the syntax-pragmatics interface
This paper presents evidence to support the idea that the syntax-pragmatic interface approach (Sorace 2007, Yoshimura et al. 2011) can provide a plausible account for the L2 acquisition of locality imposed upon reflexives in tensed and infinitive sentences. Thirty-one native speakers of English (Control), 15 Japanese 1st year high school (HS1) and 27 2nd year HS (HS2) learners, 40 Japanese college freshmen (JCF), 27 Korean college novice (Knov) and 21 intermediate learners (Kint) read 32 short narratives and judged the truth values of their corresponding sentences of the short (correct, 1a and 2a) and long (incorrect, 1b and 2b) distance pairs (truth value judgment task). Table 1 summarizes A’ scores (grammatical sensitivity) of the reflexive interpretations in the tensed and infinitive sentences.
