New Ionmaking Technology and Evironmental Potection (IEHK)

After the new Campus-parts of the RWTH Aachen University, the IEHK (Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy), its labs, facilities and researchers are shown. The research and development including the measurement possibilities of the No-Bell-Charging System for blast furnaces is presented. Experiments at the injection-rig to inject materials into the blast furnace by different researchers are discussed. Furthermore in the pilot plant Kobesi II the influence by pulsated injection are measured e.g. by CARS (Coherent Anti-Stoke Raman Spectroscopy). To produce reduction gases e.g. out of different coals, plastics or biomasses the HTW (High Temperature Winkler) was modified, results are given. The Circored and Cirofer processes were studied to produce DIR (direct reduced iron) and LRI (low reduced iron) to use these materials in different processes. At IEHK in the framework “Steel- Ab Initio” the system Fe-Mn-C is under investigation by first principles of physics and chemistry. 23 partners e.g. IEHK and MPIE (Max Planck Institute for Iron Research) are cooperating to study the behaviour of steel by using different chemical compositions; results and tendencies will be discussed. For the Oxi-Cup carbon containing filter-dust-briquettes were studied since 1995 with focus on their reduction and melting behaviour; interesting is that similar to pure iron oxide agglomerates these dust-briquettes often show firstly a reduction with an iron layer on the outside and the melting follows in the inner column. The injection of further waste was studied. The dioxine research brought beside a lot of fundamentals the result that at the sinter plant dioxine leaves the strand in the last wind boxes; this was used in different industrial plants. Particulate matter emission can be divided into inhalable, thoraric and respirable. To remove these particles with a diameter < 10 μm the off-gas is treated with sticking agents to form agglomerates which can be removed from the gas stream. As an example of CO2-saving nut-coke in pellet- or sinter- layers in BF was examined, results are given to reduce the energy losses.
