Is identification of anti-SSA and/or SSB antibodies necessary in serum samples referred for antinuclear antibodies testing?

To evaluate fluorescence characteristics and clinical significance of anti.SSA and SSB antibodies and to explore whether identification of these antibodies was necessary in sera for ANA testing.Of 4978 consecutive samples submitted to the laboratory.259 with anti.SSA or SSB reactivity and reliable information were analyzed.Sera from another 50 1 well.defined patients and 50healthy individuals were identified for anti-SSA and SSB antibodies. There were 9.3%negative specimens.30.6%with lOW to intermediate titer.3 1.0%with intermediate to high titer and 29.O%with high titer in SSA+SSB—group, versus 1 7.2%,44.8%,27.6%and 10.3%in SSA-SSB+group.Compared with SSA+SSB-group and SSA-SSB+group,the proportion(0.5%)of negative specimens was significantly decreased in SSA+SSB+group (P<O.001),and the proportion(53.5%)of specimens with high titer was significantly increased(P<0.oo 1).Besides speckled pattem,anti-SSA and/or SSB antibody.positive samples presented various paaerns on HEp-2 cells, such as homogeneous pattem, combined speckled and homogeneous paRem,centromere pattern, nucleolar paRem,nuclear dots and peripheral nucleoplasmic pattern.Furthermore, only less than 50%of both SSA+SSB.
