Results of Brachytherapy for early cancers of the Lip,Nose & Oral Cavity
Apart from oral tongue cancers, other less common early cancers of the oral cavity occurring in the buccal mucosa, palate, lip and nose can be readily cured by either surgery or radiotherapy (RT). While definitive surgery often requires wide surgical margins in the surrounding mucosa or underlying tissue necessitating mutilating resections, primary RT can spare thesurgically-induced anatomical, cosmetic andfunctional morbidities, and achieve equivalentloco-regional control. This advantage can becritically important in patients with lip or buccalcancers located near the lip commissure wheresurgical reconstruction may not be able to restore the normal sphincter function, or in hard palate and nosewhere bone resection and hence fenestration isrequired for adequate deep surgical margin.
