Migration of Neural Progenitors after Cerebral Ischemia
Ischemia causes seemingly irresolvable damage to brain. The discovery of the neural stem cells andthe subsequent observations of increased neurogenesis in adult brain f-ollowing ischemia has led tooptimism that the post-ischemic brain can be repaired a-t least to a certain extent. It is clear that we arejust starting to understand theintegration of various molecular regulators of neurogenesis. As one ofthe most impo-rtant steps of neurogenesis after stroke, migration depends on cooperative signalingbyhighly localized attractants, repellants and guidance cues. The mechanisms seem si-milar to thoseinvolved in developmental axon outgrowth and neuronal migration. Ther-efore,the expectation is thatmore molecular regulators of neuroblast migration andtheir interactions will be identified bycontinuing the investigation of developmenta-l guidance molecules within this adult system after braininjury.
