Ways of Feeling:How to Tell a Tale

One of the key factors propelling the development of appraisal theory in SFL has been the study of story genres, following on from Labov”s concernwith evaluation in relation to the point of narrative and Plum and Rothery”s exploration of stories in community and school settings (Labov & Waletzky1967/1997, Labov 1984, Martin & Plum 1997, Rothery & Stenglin1997).Work on news stories in media discourse gave further impetus to this research(Iedema 1997, Iedema et al 1994, White 1997). In this paper I want to return to the question of story genres and explore appraisal in relation to a set of agnate texts, each concerned with or inspired by a fight to the death between an Australian and a Japanese soldier in New Guinea in WWⅡ. The analyses deployed are taken from Martin & White 2005, which compiles a generation of work on appraisal undertaken by SFL discourse analysts around the world.
