Engagement and Emotion
Engagement is one of the systems within Martin”s APPRAISAL framework (For details of the APPRAISAL theory, see Martin 2000; Martin andRose 2003. For summary, see Martin and Rose 2003: Chapter 2. Forintroduction in Chinese, see 王振华 2001. For application to the Chineselanguage, see 王振华 2002, 2004, 2006). It studies sources of attitude, that is,where the language user”s attitude comes from. The language user mayproject his own idea without any dialogism, that is, via ”monogloss” , ormay project what other people say to support his attitude, that is, via”heterogloss”. When the language user airs his assertion without projectingany other” s opinion, the evaluating channel is mono. It is his own voice or”first voice” .
