English Idioms and Appraisal
This paper analyzes the evaluative functions of English idioms. Working within the Appraisal framework developed by Martin and his colleagues(Christie & Martin 1997; Eggins & Slade 1997; Martin 2000, 2002a; Martin& Rose 2003; White 1998, 1999), the paper first demonstrates how idioms areused to express Affect, Judgment and Appreciation, and then focuses on howthese expressions provide grading in terms of the interpersonal force attachedto an utterance. It will be shown that idioms often evaluate implicitly bydescribing extraordinary behaviour or with metaphorical expressions and thatthey serve to entail multiple values, which work together as amplifiers tointensify the evaluative force.
