The Use of Polymers in Chemical EOR and Water Shutoff/Profile Control Applications
Polymer technology has a great potential in Improved Oil Recovery applications. As Mobility Control agent, polymer ensures good mobility control during chemical flood. On the other hand, polymer formulations, once injected into the formation surrounding the wellbore, enable a better control of water influx, which results in Water Shutoff effect in production well treatments, or Conformance Control effect in injection well treatments. Recent progresses in product chemistry and reservoir description have lead to a better control of the technology, which has suffered for a long time of low confidence due to improper use. An illustration of these new improvements is given with two examples, i.e. a successful polymer flood project implemented in a heavy oil reservoir, and a successful water shutoff treatment by microgels in an underground gas storage well.
