Applying innovative fluorescence spectroscopy techniques to study petroleum inclusions

Conventionally petroleum fluid inclusions (FI) are primarily analysed with microscopic, spectroscopic and bulk geochemical methods. These methods can be quite labour intensive and costly, and are not suitable for routine analyses of large numbers of samples. The recent development of the Quantitative Grain Fluorescence QGF; ”1”) and Total Scanning Fluorescence (TSF; ”2”) techniques at CSIRO Petroleum has now provided a relatively rapid and cost-effective alternative for studying these palaeo-fluids. Building upon the QGF technique and the Molecular Composition of Inclusions (MCI) cleaning procedures ”3”,we have developed a rapid non-destructive analytical method for analysing petroleum inclusions in bulk using UV spectroscopy ”QGF plus; 1,4” and a crushing-and-extraction method for analysing inclusion oil using TSF ”2”. Both methods are extremely sensitive and are able to detect trace amounts of fluid inclusion oil with a detection limit better than the Autospec GC-MS system used for MCI analyses.
