Anti-Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1 IIIB) activity of lectins from marine invertebrates
We investigated five different specificity lectins from marine invertebrates. Four lectins, DTL and DTL-A from Didemnum. ternatanum, SVL-2 from Serpula. vermicularis. and CGL from Crenomytilys. grayanus were shown inhibition of infection of the C8166 cell line, by human immunodeficiency virus-1 IIIB in vitro. DTL, DTL-A and CGL displayed inhibition of cell-cell fusion syncytia formation between chronically infected H9 and uninfected C8166 cells. Cytotoxic activity was shown by DTL-A and CGL. In our studies, the lectins form marine invertebrates with different specificity were substantiated by an increase in the inhibitory activity in the series: DTL>SVL-2>DTL-A>CGL. SVL-1 didn” t display anti-HIV activity.
