Comprehensive Approach toward Enhancing Service Availability of Wireless Sensor Networks

Service availability ensures that a service with relevant information can be accessed properly by legitimate users in a timely manner,This paper aims to provide an overview of recent development of a security approach including the following three research issues;(1)risk analysis method providing wireless sensor network designers with a guideline to select a set of the security countermeasures that mitigates damages from possible availability attacks in the network,(2)management architecture for clustered sensor networks against distributed DoS attacks,and(3)secure middleware for group management based on the Jini service environment. For the first research issue.we suggest a method to estimate the damage caused by possible threat and the anticipated effectiveness of countermeasures. Regarding the second issue,we present a cooperative architecture of security management in order to protect access of legitimate users from distributed DoS attacks. Here,we consider high-level security mechanisms, including secure group management. In dealing with last research issue,a secure middleware has been developed and an experiment has been conducted to measure the reduced turn-around time compared with the standard Jini.
