Phase diagram of iron-rich portion and magnetostriction for Fe-Ga-Al alloys
It has been recognized that a substantial increase in the magnetostrietion of Fe occurs with the substitution of small amounts of non-magnetic elements, such as Ga and AI, for Fe. The magnetostriction of Fe-Ga alloys increases up to 17 at. % Ga and similar result has been obtained for Fe-Al alloys. In order to develop the Fe-Ga-AI magnetostrictive alloys, it is necessary to determine the relationship between the magnetostriction and composition for Fe-Ga-Ai alloys.This paper has discussed the relationship between the magnetostriction and composition for Fe-Ga-AI alloys, based on the investigation of the phase diagram of iron-rich portion and magnetostriction for Fe-Ga-Al alloys. The composition of Fe-Ga-AI alloys with the optical magnetostriction has been determined, and the oriented magnetostrictive material with the optical composition of Fe82Ga9Al9 has been manufactured by directional solidification technique.
