Application of Blood Cultures for the Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases
Sepsis is often defined as the symptomatic presence of microorganisms in the blood. The presence ofmicroorganisms in the blood of a patient is clinically important due to the considerable morbidity andmortality associated with sepsis. Indeed, the overall mortality of sepsis is approximately 30%. It is thus nosurprise that blood cultures have been used to detect clinically significant sepsis and bacteremia for over100 years.
