PIV experiments and large eddy simulations of single loop flow fields in Rushton turbine stirred tanks
The single loop flow fields in Rushton impellerstirred tanks with clearance C=0.15T wereinvestigated by using PIV experiments and large eddysimulation (LES)methods.The velocity and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE)were carefully resolved and described with high resolution camera.The regionswith high TKE were affected by the movement of thetrailing vortices generated behindthe blade.The effect of the geometry configurationand Reynolds number were compared.and the Reynoldsnumber has little effect on the mean flow for theconfiguration of D=T/3.C=0.15T,however,the singleloop flow pattern was changed into a double loop onewhen increasing the impeller diameter to D=0.5T.TheLES results were compared with the PIV experimentsand the LDA data in the literatures.The eflfect ofthe grid was validated and the levels of Iocalanisotropy of turbulence near the impeller dischargeregions were investigated.Both the phase averaged andphase resolved LES results were in good agreementwith the PIV experimental data.
