Global Crisis,World Press and National Image of China:A study of Press Coverage on SARS in U.S.,U.K.,and Canada
Global journalism(e.g.global coverage of foreign news)means that journalists haveto Drovide accurate, fair, balanced, contextual reporting of countries about which theyknow little. This is not an easy task, especially for international correspondents(theparachutists),who drop in,get the story and get out as quickly as they can SO they can getonto the next trouble spot(or country). On the other hand, news manipulation can beeasy when people don’t know the country reported—its culture and its politics. As such, image of the third world portrayed is rather different from“reality”——usually is presentedas the disadvantage“other”.①This(often)negative picture of the third world,be it trueor false。would generally forms the bases for how the“globe”see or perceive that nation—affecting a nation’S perception on another country. The problem is worsen further withthe inequalities of news flows, uneven communication resources, and the dominance ofwestern actors. While this concern is not new,its impact on China is a significant coursefor study.
