Research Strategy of ITRI in Water Reclamation and Desalination
Taiwan has plenty of rainfall about 90 billion m3/yr,however,Taiwan still faces to the instability of water supply ecause of uneven distribution over space and season.Especially.the industrial water demand will substantially increase from 1.7 billion m3/yr in 2006 to 2.8 billion m3/yr in 2021.To guarantee the enough water supply for domestic and industrial use.diverse new water resources are studied.These water resources include the reclamation of agricultural return water and sewage,seawater desalination,and reuse/recycle/reclamation of industrial water and wastewater.To meet the requirement of good quality and enough quantity,Industrial Technology Research Institute(ITRI)has developed and demonstrated several water and wastewater reclamation technologies.For example,BioNET reactor filled with porous compressible carriers has been applied for the reclamation of agricultural return water and lake water,it can offer a large surface area for adherence and growth of microorganisms.A Full—scale plant operation with 15,000 m3/d of capacity showed that BioNET process is high efficiency and cost.effective for removal of organics and ammonia.For the industrial wastewater reuse/reclamation.the combination of anaerobic reactor,membrane bioreactor,and reverse osmosis is applied in TFT-LCD industry;the electrodialysis system is used in steel industry for make-up of cooling water.To meet further zero(or near-zero)liquid discharge requirement,membrane distillation and membrane crystallization with high heat transfer efficiency will be evaluated in the future.
