Technical and Economic Considerations for Desalination Plant Expansion
A long series of drought years and a sharp increase in the demand for water in Israel has led the Government to accelerate her plans for increasing the desalination capacity in the country both by new installations and by the expansion of existing plants.Three plants are candidates for expansion, the plants operating in Ashkelon and Palmachim and the plant under construction in Hadera. The Palmachim desalination plant was desgned in 2002 for a capacity of 100,000cu.m./day wity the potential to increase capacity to 200,000cu.m/day.To this end certain infrastructure elements such as the intake piping system and the raw water pumpingstation were designed and partially installed for the final capacity.Land was also earmarked for the erection of the plant expansion which was emvosaged as being a ”mirrorimage”of the original unit.Today, six years later, the expansion is under discussion and the ”mirror image”concept is under careful examination.
