MARS – evidence and controversies
The use of Molecular Adsorbent Recirculation system(MARS)for patients with liver failure was first described by Stange and Mitzner at Rostock,Germany in 1993. Within a decade”s time,MARS has become one of the most commonly used non-biological artificial liver support system. Albumin bound putative toxins of liver failure transverses across a highly specialised membrane into a recirculating albumin dialysate in which the toxins were removed by two adsorbent columns within the circuit.
