Scripting Rapid Collaborative Knowledge Improvement:An Exploratory Study on Preservice Teachers in Singapore
Though collaborative learning had become common in tertiary education, appropriating collaboration scripts with technology support is still much lacking, and the collaboration process were usually left to the autonomy of students.Left in laissez-faire and a lack of scaffolding and monitoring, was collaborative learning able to achieve its intended objectives? The present study aims to gain insights through examining how pre-service teachers in Singapore appropriate scripts for collaborative knowledge improvement in a computer-supported collaborative learning(CSCL)environment named AppleTree. The use of two collaboration scripts to structure productive CSCL was adopted in this study. The representational tool AppleTree, which was designed with the incorporation of the social collaboration script Funnel model, aid in structuring the group-level and class-level collaborative process to achieve rapid Collaborative Knowledge Improvement(RCKI).A cognitive script, which was incorporated in the activity design and implementation, aimed to level up the cognitive quality of the students' generated artefacts.Preliminary results showed that students collaborated effectively with the appropriation of the social collaboration script and the cognitive script. There is a positive impact of the scripted collaborative learning on students' rapid knowledge improvement.
