A Comprehensive Investigation of the Impacts of Competition on English Game-based Learning

Competition has been widely applied in game-based learning but it is still inconclusive whether competition is beneficial to student learning. To this end,we developed an Academic English Competition Cloze Game(AECCG),in which competition was incorporated into an English game-based learning. In addition,an empirical study was undertaken to examine the effectiveness of competition from multiple aspects, including differences between the single-player game(SPG)and the multiple-player game(MPG)and task difficulties. The results indicated that the MPG learners have lower learning performance and spend less time answering the questions with more mistakes. On the other hand, the task difficulty had relatively high negative impacts in the setting of the MPG.In other words, the competition has a negative impact on learners, regardless of learning performance or the learning behavior.
