A Systematic Literature Review of Online Learning in Chemistry Education

  Driven by the fast development of internet,online learning has rapidly become the new favorite of modern education.While online learning brings the potentials of large enrollment,flexible and adaptable learning pace,and low cost of educational resources,it is concerned that the risk of high drop rate,lack of human interactions,and discrimination of less prepared students may come along with it.In spite of the challenges,an increasing effort in research and development of online chemistry education were published in recent years.This short presentation summarizes the results of a systematic review of literature reports about online chemistry education in the past five years(2014-2018).The specific results include(1)the number of online chemistry education articles published in the past five years,(2)the specific sub-discipline topics,(3)course types(lecture vs.laboratory)(4)education level(K-12,high school,or college),(5)class size,(6)teaching/educational technology used,(7)teaching delivery methods,and(8)assessment methods.The review results indicate that current research in online chemistry education dedicates much efforts into the creation and development of online educational contents.The presentation will also offer suggestions to those who wish to conduct online chemistry education for either research or dissertation study.
