A Study Using 3D Interactive Technology to Support Earth Science Learning for Elementary School Students

When learning astronomy, planetary concepts(such as planet rotation and revolution)are often too abstract, dry, and boring for elementary school students. In terms of the planets of the Solar System, even the planets that can be seen with the naked eye,i.e.Mercury,Venus,Mars,Jupiter,and Saturn can only be presented in a static manner against a starry backdrop.Students only recite knowledge for the purposes of taking exams and have no real understanding of the subject matter. This study integrated the constellations, the solar system with planets, and Greek mythology using 3D Unity interactive technology and developed a game-based learning system to support earth science learning for elementary school students.A total of 22 elementary school students participated in this study. The results show significant test average score improvements for all categories; although the range of improvement was smaller for Greek mythology compared to the other two categories and leaves room for future improvement, these analysis results confirm that our system is effective in the context of astronomy learning. The Greek mythology within our system was not the main focus of astronomy learning, and therefore used static stories and games to support astronomy learning. These stories were perhaps too abstract for elementary school students,so in future dynamic 3D animations and multimedia interaction should be used to strengthen the learning effectiveness of Greek mythology.
