Learning plants by immersive virtual reality:a pilot exploration of elementary school students' flow experience and attitudes

This study developed an immersive virtual reality(VR)app, namely "Find The ROOT," based on the current science and technology curriculum structure in fifth grade of elementary school in Taiwan to help young students to learn plants. To evaluate the HMD-based VR app from learners' perspectives,a pilot exploration of elementary school students' flow experience and attitudes was conducted. This study therefore invited 37 elementary school students to participate in the evaluation trial. The results show that the students' overall flow experience was generally high, particularly for the senses of concentration and autotelic experience. They exhibited positive attitudes toward the learning activity(e.g.,perceiving high level of usefulness of VR learning and intention to learn by VR in the future). The roles of flow experiences in the students' attitudes were also identified.
