Hydrodynamic Response of the Mooring-Buoy Systems and Mussel Longlines under Currents and Waves
This paper presents the numerical simulations of the hydrodynamic response of the mooring-buoy system under currents and waves with application to aquaculture longlines for shell fish farming.First, mooring tensions for the cylindrical and spherical buoys are obtained with commercially available software OrcaFlex and compared with the results of the custom-developed package Aqua-FE.The results demonstrate good correspondence of two software packages and capture the most significant hydrodynamic effects including different behavior of cylindrical and spherical buoys under increasing current velocity. Then, numerical simulations of longline with mussel droppers are conducted. It is shown that under environmental loading conditions typical for North Atlantic, the structural integrity of the system will be preserved. However,an excessive motion of the longline and the droppers is observed for severe storms.
