Longitudinal dispersion of micro-organisms in a turbulent open-channel flow
The longitudinal dispersion of micro-organisms in a turbulent open-channel flow is significant for understanding various ecological phenomena associated with the water conveyance process in an open channel. This paper analyses micro-organisms migration in a fully developed open-channel flow with the logarithmic velocity distribution. The migration velocity and longitudinal dispersivity of a micro-organisms cloud are analyzed based on Aris'concentration moment method. Results show that the strong swimming velocity can result in the non-monotonous variation of longitudinal dispersion coefficient and velocity of centred motion during the initial stage, enhance the centred motion, and weaken the longitudinal dispersion of micro-organisms during the stable stage. The concentration distribution of micro-organisms concentration is illustrated and analyzed using the Edgeworth expansion. The strong cell swimming in the vertical direction can accumulate micro-organisms near the free-water surface, while the weak cell swimming tends to make uniform distribution across the channel.
