Distribution of gyrotactic micro-organisms in a round jet
Understanding the distribution of gyrotactic micro-organisms in a jet is significant for environmental and ecological risk assessments associated with harmful algae blooms in lakes, estuaries, reservoirs.Presented in this paper are a laboratory observation and a numerical simulation for suspensions of Heterosigma akashiwo(H.akashiwo)in a round jet.A mathematical model was applied to predict the cell's migration in the round jet, based on the combination of Fokker-Planck equation and the Monte Carlo method. Results show that cells accumulate symmetrically with respect to the axis of the jet and that a distribution of inverted triangle appears for swimming cells near the free-water surface. However,no obvious accumulation was observed for passive particles, which means cell's swimming plays an important role in the distribution of micro-organisms in the round jet.Numerical results of cell distribution are in good agreement with the observations by the planar laser-induced fluorescence technology.
