Application of Switchable-hydrophilic Tertiary Amines for Enhanced Oil Recovery
A series of process additives called Switchable-Hydrophilicity Tertiary Amines(SHTAs,such as triethylamine,N,N-dimethylcyclohexylamine,N,N-dimethylbenzylamine,N,N,N',N'-tetraethyl-1,3-propanediamine)in their ionic form have been synthesized and applied to enhance bitumen recovery from oil sands ores.It was found that the addition of SHTA solution as novel additives increased the recovery of heavy oil.By using their CO2-responsive miscibility, these SHTA additives could be recovered from a-queous solution in an easy way, requiring no distillation step. The recovered SHTAs could be used at least five times, without sacrificing its efficiency in extracting heavy oils from oil ores.According to the meas-urement of solid properties and oil-water interfacial properties,it was found that the addition of SHTA solution plays an important role in modifying the bitumen and solids surfaces. The protonated SHTAs would adsorb on bitumen surface, forming ions pairs, which reduced the oil-water interfacial tension. The wettability of the mineral solids surfaces also increased, which in turn enhanced the liberation of bitumen from solid surface.Consequently, the detachment of bitumen from solid surfaces becomes much easier and more complete. The application of these"green chemicals"as process additives in enhancing heavy oil sep-aration from unconventional petroleum ores would be much more attractive due to their unique switchable properties.
