Conceptual design of deployable solar array inspired by Miura origami
This paper dedicates on a conceptual design of origami inspired solar arrays. The requirements of novel solar arrays for future spacecrafts are firstly discussed, followed by a summary of origami applied in industry, especially on deployable solar arrays. The conclusion that origami is a preferred solution has been obtained.Comparisons between origami patterns lead to a Miura-inspired scheme.A system design including panels, deployable mechanism, and hold-down and release mechanism has been implemented. The kinematics and dynamic analyses have been carried out so that the feasibility of Miura-inspired solar array has been verified.A detailed design will be accomplished, and a prototype will be established for ground validation, followed by iterative optimizations in the next stage.
