Motivators and Demotivators of Learner Engagement in Gamified Learning Environment:A Qualitative Study at an Asian University

This study aimed at understanding learner motivation and demotivation of participating in a gamified learning environment at an Asian University. Two modules of a research methods course were gamified based on the GAFCC gamification design model. The duration of this study was 6 weeks. Semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted to collect students' feedback. Interview results indicated that"goal setting","feedback", and"social comparison"were important motivators for learner participation in a gamified setting. Other motivators and demotivators were also reported. Overall, learners perceived it meaningful to integrate gamification strategies into their courses. The contribution of this study was that it empirically examined the effectiveness of the GAFCC model, and provided insights on factors that motivate or demotivate learners in a gamified setting. Suggestions on future gamification design and research were discussed at the end of this paper.
