Dynamics of heat pump-assisted distillation via mechanical vapor recompression for separating close-boiling mixture

ABSTRACT:The steady-state design of mechanical vapor recompression heat pump distillation process has received considerable attention. However, few papers discussed the dynamic control of these more complex and poorly understood systems. This paper showed the results of a detailed, quantitative simulation study of the dynamics of mechanical vapor recompression heat pump distillation which was to separate the close-boiling mixture of n-butanol and isobutanol using Aspen Plus Dynamics.A basic control structure and two improved control structures, single temperature with single composition control structure and dual temperature control structure, were explored. With ±10% feed disturbances, the proposed basic control structure can only maintain the quality specification of bottom product of the mechanical vapor recompression heat pump distillation column. Two improved control structures were succeeded in holding the top and bottom products purities.Detailed analyses for single temperature with single composition control structure and dual temperature control structure were made based on control performances and energy consuming, the results illustrated that dual temperature control structure outperformed Single temperature with single composition control structure in handling the same disturbances.
