Fungal elicitors stimulate biomass and active ingredients accumulation in Dendrobium catenatum plantlets

Objective Evaluate the induction effects of various fungal species to ascertain the main active constituents of the fungal elicitors for increasing the biomass and production of active ingredients in Dendrobium catenatum plantlets. Results Biomass yields as well as 6 active ingredients contents were enhanced in D.catenatum plantlets after 8 weeks of co-culturing with mycelium extract(ME),ethanol sediment(ES)and protein-polysaccharide fraction(PPF)compared to controls(P<0.05).The induction effect of ME or ES was not significant different from PPF(P>0.05).Stem fresh weight(FW)and leaf FW reached maxima under the treatment of 240 mg PPF 1-1 from DO14(Pestalotiopsis sp.).Productions of polysaccharides, naringenin and schaftoside reached maximum when treated with 60 mg PPF l-1 from DO14.Ethanol extractives, total flavonoids and total phenols contents increased most under the treatment of 30 mg PPF 1-1 from DO18(Talaromyces sp.),DO19(Xylariaceae sp.)and DO120(Hypoxylon sp.).Conclusion PPF is the active constituent of the fungal elicitors. Its application can promote the growth and improve the quality of D.catenatum.
