Research on test method of short-circuit current performance of surge protective devices

  According to the users reaction to the SPDs of burning events under the condition of non-lightning, the article analyses the method of IEC61643-11 8.3.5.3 short-circuit current performance test in the Lightning High-voltage laboratory, and finds that the copper block is substituted for the SPDs Non-linear element (switching type or limited disconnector type element).According the method, The SPD all can achieve short-circuit current performance test requirements.However, in the actual operation of the SPD installed in the Low-voltage power system, no copper block was used to replace the non-linear element of SPD,and any overcurrent would flow through the non-linear components of SPD.For this reason, this research adopts the method of without copper block replacing the non-linear element of SPD, and carries out short-circuit current performance test for SPD.The test results show the SPDs of without copper block replacing the non-linear element is almost completely burned in short-circuit current performance test.It is proved that the method of IEC61643-11 8.3.3.1 short-circuit current performance test does not conform to the actual situation of SPD in operation.In view of the problem of not cooperating of the energy and response time of the non-linear elements of the disconnector and the SPD in the Short-circuit current performance test.In this paper, the working principle, technical parameters,application requirements and test methods of SPD special short circuit current disconnector are given.
