Accuracy of LiDAR Data for Estimation of Individual Tree Height in Forest Stands (Case study:Caspian forest)
In traditional method,measurement of individual tree height in broad-leaved forests,particularly in uneven-aged,high density and multi-storey stands is difficult and time-consuming.In leaf-on tree conditions,airborne laser scanning system was used to acquire Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data by sampling density of 4-5 points/m2 in a hardwood stand located in Caspian forest,northern of Iran.The accuracy of collected LiDAR data for estimating height of individual trees was investigated.Hundred individual sample trees,belonging to two species.Maple (Acer velutinum) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus),were selected.These trees were located in upper storey and/or without neighboring overlap.Heights of trees were measured using Vertex 1V.Center coordinates of the sample trees were determined using DGPS system and total station.Sample trees were detected in laser points cloud using their center coordinates and crown diameter.The height of sample trees were extracted directly from laser points cloud.Linear regression model of height of trees in field measurements and laser points cloud yielded coefficients of determination ( ) (0.96,0.95),RMSe (1.05 m (6?),1.48 m (6?),and relative error (4?,3?) for A.velutinum and C.betulus,respectively.Mean difference between sample trees height of laser point cloud and field measurements were achieved -1.04 m and -1.53 m for A.velutinum and C.betulus,respectively.Results clarified that LiDAR data is accurate for tree height estimation,therefore,it is recommended to study other above story tree species in Caspian forest stands.Complementary researches for estimating the height of trees located in lower story and middle story can be performed with collecting LiDAR data in leaf-off conditions.
