Preparation of ferrous hydroxide loaded nanofibrous membrane and their Cr(Ⅵ) removal performance

The removal of hexavalent chromium Cr (Ⅵ) from contaminated aqueous solutions is very significant because it is carcinogenic and highly toxic to humans, animals, and plants. In this work,a simple and effective route composed of electrospinning,cross-linking reactions and chelation reaction is presented for the fabrication of ferrous hydroxide (Fe(OH)2) loaded nanofibrous membranes, which are subsequently used for the Cr (Ⅵ) removal from aqueous solution.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)characterizations revealed that nanoparticulate Fe(OH)2 are effectively loaded on the surface of composite nanofibrous membrane. The Cr(Ⅵ) removal experiment showed that the prepared Fe(OH)2 loaded nanofibrous membranes exhibited outstanding Cr (Ⅵ) removal performance. Moreover, the adsorption experiments also indicated that the adsorption process belonged to Freundlich adsorption model. Therefore, this work not only provides a highly efficient adsorbent to remove Cr (Ⅵ) from waste water, but also offers a simple and efficient new method for environmental restoration field.
