Adolescents Writing Skills and the Quality of Their Questionnaire Responses

The connections between cognitive development, literacy skills, and quality of responses to questionnaire items is assessed on the basis of two large (N > 20,000),nationally-representative writing and science achievement tests administered to 13-and 16-year old Canadian students. The results show that overall response quality to writing-and science disposition items increases with age.Additionally, the findings suggest that the specific cognitive skill of recognizing that disagreement with a negatively-formulated sentence is equivalent to agreement with its positively-formulated counterpart is not well understood by adolescents with low reading performance.
