HIGH PERFORMANCE CARBON BASED ELECTROCATALYST FOR OXYGEN REDUCTION BY DOPING MULTIPLE HETEROATOMS INTO CARBON MATERIAL
Carbon based non-noble metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction with high performance were prepared by doping nitrogen, iron, and boron in the carbon black at high temperature, in which in-situ formed polyaniline as precursor of nitrogen, iron salt and boric acid as precursors of Fe and B. No iron or boron oxide particles can be observed by TEM, implying that the hetero atoms were well dispersed on the surface of carbon black. It was found that the addition of boron could enhance the activity of the catalyst significantly. In alkaline media, the onset potential and half-wave potential for oxygen reduction both positively shifted 20mV compared with that of Fe-N-C without boron, and the limiting current density increased over 50%. It was suggested that the enhanced catalytic activity may result from the synergetic effect between nitrogen and boron atoms, due to their wider gap of electronegativity than that between nitrogen and carbon.
