Study of Modified Wollastonite Toughening Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin is an important and widely used thermosetting material, but its toughness and fatigue resistance is limited. In order to improve the toughness of epoxy resin the surface modified wollastonite was used as toughening agent. The modification effect of stearic acid and two silane coagents on wollastonite were compared and then the contents of modified wollastonite on mechanical properties were studied. The results indicated that the stearic acid has best modification effect on wollastonite, the maximum contact angle of modified surface is 140 degree. The toughness of epoxy resin composite was enhanced significantly. While the content of wollastonite modified by stearic acid is 10wt% of epoxy resin, the tensile strength and impact strength increased by 47.79% and 47.95% respectively. SEM morphology of impact fracture suggests the compatibility of modified wollastonite with epoxy resin was improved.
