Integrated Sustainability in the Designed Landscape Crystalline EcoPark and Exhibition Area

Caofeidian Eco-City is a new sustainable city planned for the coastal area in Tangshan municipality, Hebei province, the Peoples Republic of China. A Sustainability Center (named Crystalline) is under development in the Eco-City. This paper explores the ideas and technologies of the 14 hectare crystalline landscape, and discusses the parameters of sustainable landscapes. Historic estuarine and aquatic ecologies of Caofeidian were studied in addition to current and past land use. Technologies that address the need for fresh food, fresh water, and the restoration of delicate ecosystems were researched along with processes for water conservation, re-use, and innovative storage. Social interaction and the design of spaces for gathering, moving, and contemplation were investigated. The methods and systems felt to best fit the goals of sustainability were incorporated into the physical design of the landscape. The Crystalline eco-park is a unique type of sustainable landscape, a large open space in an urban context that melds technology with high-quality design and is easily accessible to the general population.
