Construction of Semantic Location Model Based on Typonym Ontology
Location is becoming kind of foundamental contextinformation in ubiquitous computing enviroment. Location awareapplications require a well-formed location model. Current locationmodels can be classified into geometric location models andsemantic location models. The former only represents the geometriccoordinates without the location semantics. The later representslogical features and their semantics, but requires a large amount ofmanual modelling effort. In this paper, we present a semanticlocation model based on toponym ontology, which combineslocation semantics and spatial information. In order to supportcomputer understanding and inference based on rules, semanticlocation is formalized by using typonym ontology, whichincorporates location semaitic properties and rules. Through modelconstruction and location instance maintenance in ArcGISgeodatabase, we show that our model is simple but powerfulenough to express location semantics to support location-basedapplications. Furthermore, the location model can be used inmachine learning and rule based applications.
