Desilting Efficiency and Its Influence Factors of Settling Basins for Soil and Water Conservation
Settling basins intercept and desilt sediments from the water flow through slowing down the flow velocity, decreasing the carrying capacity of water flow by expanding the discharging area of the waterway. Settling basins are widely adopted in hydraulic engineering, hydro-electric engineering, water supply and waste water drainage engineering, etc. In those application fields. settling basins have been deeply researched and regulations were formed to standardize design and construction of the settling basins. Adopting settling basin is one of the most important engineering measures in soil and water conservation for protecting soil resources. sustain water and environment quality. According to the function and characteristics of settling basins in the soil and water conservation. the requirement of desilting efficiency of settling basins was discussed and clarified in the paper. The main factors influencing the desilting efficiency, i.e. grain size and composition of sands, speed and contribution of water flow, and water temperature were analyzed quantitatively. The results show that it is necessary to take all the main factors into account accordingly in designing of settling basins to assure their operation efficiency.
