Discussion on the Analysis Tools for the Passive Containment Cooling System of the Advanced PWR in China
Several containment analysis codes are modified with models including mechanistic convective heat and mass transfer correlations, liquid film evaporation and condensation, wall-to-wall radiant heat transfer, and so on, to simulate heat removal by the passive containment cooling system (PCCS). Especially the WGOTHIC code which is developed by Westinghouse from GOTHIC,was validated by comparing the calculation results with transient test data from the Westinghouse Large-Scale tests and used to evaluate the PCCS heat-removal capabilities of AP600 and AP1000 under the postulated events, such as a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) and a main steam line break (MSLB). In the future, the demonstration nuclear power plant employing advanced PWR (APWR) with higher power than AP1000 will be designed and constructed in China. The applicability of the PCCS analysis codes used for AP600 and AP1000 needs further evaluation. Some models and correlations in the codes may be modified, because they may not cover the range of operation parameters of the future advanced PWR with higher power. Some new phenomena may also occur with the reactor power increasing, and some new models need to be further added into the codes. In this paper, the development of the existing analysis codes for PCCS is described, the improvement and development of the PCCS analysis codes for the future PWR with higher power in China is discussed, and also that the CFD codes which had been applied to solve some thermal-hydraulic problems in Nuclear Reactor Safety (NRS) analysis are used for the PCCS analysis as the powerful accessory tools of the classic thermal-hydraulic codes applied in safety analysis is proposed.
