Synthesis of vegetable oil based polyether polyol via epoxidation followed by ring-opening reaction

Because petroleum is a nonrenewable resource, the preparation of polyols from relatively cheap and renewable natural oil is highly desired. In this study, the epoxidized cottonseed oil with epoxy oxygen content from 5.25 wt% to 6.15 wt% was first produced by peroxyformic acid generated in situ from hydrogen peroxide and formic acid, which means there were 2.8 to 3.3 epoxy groups exist in each epoxidized cottonseed oil molecule. Then the preparation of polyether polyols by the ring opening of the epoxidized cottonseed oil with sorbitol in the presence of a tetra-fluoroboric acid was explored.
